I burned my Guitar Hero 3 Iso to a DVD+R and ran the esr beta from my mass i used the Direct off since that one seems to be getting the closest to loading it. but when i load it it goes through all the colors then just stops at a black screen. I think its because my DVDs wont work with my phat ps2 so should i buy DVD-R's? or am i doing something wrong with the beta

With DVD+R you should make sure that your burning program uses the correct 'Booktype' setting for DVDROM. But I'm not sure that this is the problem you're having. I think it would freeze earlier in such a case, not going through 'all the colors' as you say.
Another possible cause of problems is of course the media quality, as these consoles are rather sensitive about that. No-name brands are mostly useless, and cheap deals may turn expensive in the end. (Half price is no good if it takes 4-5 burn attempts to make a working copy, which even then may only work so-so...)
We'd need to know more about both your console (model, age, etc) and your media (brand, recommended burn speed, real burn speed you used) in order to give more detailed help.
You should also search for information about the game itself, to see if others have found it compatible with ESR, as it obviously won't work for you either if there is some compatibility problem.

Thanks for the response ill try giving u more detail on my burner and ps2 model and what not.
Console: SCPH-30001 R
DVD player: 2.10U
Also its about a few years old
My Laptops DVD Burner is an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7563A ATA Device and i just leave the settings for it normal since in my image burn thing it doesnt have the Opitiarc setting available. And as for the disk speed i leave it on automatic. I hope that gives you a little more info i just bought some dvd-r's im going to test those out i think my ps2 just might have trouble reading them. And the type of DVD+R's are memorex

Just out of interest ZeitGeist, does your backup copy of GH3 take a particularly long time to load/save compared with the original? (like 15 seconds or so)

can someone write step by step how to prepare DVD9 ISO for burning (in what order to apply patches), and how to burn it (programs names with their versions)?
thanks, i already have DVD5 version (before ESR i was using SM 3.3) of GOW, but i wanted to have full version (finally i can, thanks to ESR )

did you try IMG Burn http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download as Ive used it to do most of my games if you would like me to try Nero for you let me no what Nero version you have
1 burn ISO to hard drive
2 patch ISO with Toxic DL patcher
3 patch ISO with ESRDiscPatcher or MementoDiscPatcher
4 burn it to disk
if you still can not get it to work take it to a friends place to see if his\her burner will do both layers as i had a scratch on my GOW so it would not burn on my burner at my friends it worked Good luck to you as I think that GOW 1 GOW 2 are the best games on the Ps2 .

About ESR Source Code
It would be nice if at this point ffgriever publish the ESR source code under some kind of licence, maybe another programers can help with his project, ESR is still beta but work very nice with almost 90% of ps2 games, and give us a better compatibility than HDL, maybe in a future ESR could read games from HD too with more stability and more compatibility than HDLoader, but it's a hard work for only one programmer and the comunity is intersted in colaborate with this project, me for example i'm intersted in colaborate in some way.
